Professional Background

Dominic is an Accredited Specialist in Criminal Law. He practises exclusively in criminal law.

He started his legal career working in private practice for some of Sydney’s leading criminal defence lawyers. During this time, he lectured at the PCYC Traffic Offender Intervention Program (TOIP).

After working in private practice for several years, Dominic worked as a Criminal Defence Lawyer at the Aboriginal Legal Service (NSW/ACT) Limited (‘ALS’) and Legal Aid NSW for almost 7 years. Whilst at ALS and Legal Aid, he appeared in hundreds of bail applications, sentences, and defended hearings. He has appeared as an advocate in the Children’s Court, Local Court, District Court and Supreme Court of NSW.

As a Senior Lawyer at Legal Aid NSW, Dominic was a member of the the ‘High Risk Offender Unit’, a specialist advice and litigation team, tasked with representing clients in post-sentence order applications applied for by the State of New South Wales in the Supreme Court of NSW. These matters involve persons previously convicted of the State’s most serious offences. Dominic has represented clients in extended supervision order and continuing detention order matters under the Crimes (High Risk Offenders) Act 2006, Terrorism (High Risk Offenders) Act 2017 and the Criminal Code Act 1995 (Cth) with one of these matters being the first of its kind in NSW.

In 2023, Dominic was recognised by the Law Society of New South Wales as an Accredited Specialist in Criminal Law. Here is an article published on the online Law Society Journal which lists Dominic as 1 of 12 lawyers in NSW who received Specialist Accreditation in Criminal Law in 2023.

The Specialist Accreditation Chair of the Law Society NSW, Jacqueline Dawson says:

“Specialist Accreditation is held by less than 5% of the profession here in New South Wales. Specialist Accreditation is a rigorous process and getting accredited is just the start. When a specialist retains their accreditation year on year their clients know the value of the advice they receive.”

In December 2023, Dominic founded Gleesons Law. He regularly appears in the Children’s Court, Local Court, District Court and the Supreme Court of New South Wales.
